OVERVIEW
About RadioCentral Programming
RadioCentral is a cloud-based programming platform for radio management.
With RadioCentral, users need to spend far less time and resources in provisioning and updating their radio fleets, as they can quickly manage and update their radios from any location
The primary users of RadioCentral consists of Radio System Administrators for Public Safety Communications
What I did
My primary role at Motorola Solutions was to help in the redesign of certain features and components of RadioCentral Programming. This includes…
prototyping new updates to the system that would make editing within RadioCentral far more optimized (reducing a 40+ minute long process to down to 2 minutes, an 80% decrease in time spent),
redesigning the dashboard and implementing responsive design principles,
designing various other features for next release,
conducting a general audit of the platform,
…and more
WHAT I LEARNED
Navigating difficulties in coworker collaboration
Problem
Because the team members for this project were located across the globe, all in different timezones and all with limited availability, there were significant challenges in scheduling meetings where everyone could join
As a result, it was hard to get everyone on the same page when it came to project requirements, as members who weren’t present in one meeting would come to the next with ideas on decisions we already made
Solution
Revise Meeting Participants - We narrowed down the number of required participants in each meeting so as to increase our odds of getting everyone present when we meet up
Voting + Commenting on Decisions via groupchat - This way we wouldn’t have to wait for everyone to be present in order to discuss and make decisions
Collect Final Decisions Into a Single Document - On this document, I would list the decisions we made as well as when these decisions were made
Experience handing off a project
Here, I acquired the ability of designing a Universal Basic System (UBS) handoff, which is essentially a file on Figma with all the flows laid out in a linear fashion with documentation on what each screen is for underneath each frame.
I would also include all the components to be used in these flows
With this UBS format, it’s easier for the engineers to put together the design with minimal miscommunication and confusion
Experience working on a project with high technical complexity
RadioCentral is a product that is incredibly complicated and has a lot of moving parts. I’m glad for this opportunity because it allowed me to flex my UX muscles in a way that a personal project likely would not have
Being put in this environment and having to rapidly acquaint myself with the platform helped me with my future work at Zebra Technologies and my award-winning thesis project for my Masters degree at MICA
Let’s make great things together.
