Lived Past and Ideal Future

For my Graphic Design For Non-Majors class in the fall of 2019, we were given an assignment where we were to design our “lived past” and what we see as our idealized future. For each project, I post the preliminary sketches, the final sketch, and the final design.

Ideal Future

For ideal future, I depicted things I treasure the most: nature, excitement, friendship, along with economic freedom. To depict excitement, I made the setting a futuristic mall set in Singapore. The two girls in the front are representative of friendship.

Lived Past

For Lived Past, I chose Naperville, even though I was born and raised in another town because the two towns are very close-by and I experienced more of Naperville than I did of of my own town. I chose to use a pastel color scheme because it is very childish, which makes sense since I spent my childhood in Naperville.

I also made the design to be more nostalgic of mid 19th century poster designs, specifically surrounding the Gold Rush. There is therefore a juxtaposition between old and new that I tried to exploit in, for instance, the portrayal of the map of modern day Naperville and the surrounding areas. However, I also added "Cession 148" because that's the session where the native people had their land changed into settler territory.
